PTIN’s and You

Now is the time to start thinking about registering for a PTIN.  The Internal revenue service encourages people who are paid to prepare taxes to get them as soon as possible before the end of the year as to avoid any type of delays or rushes.  If you did not know already starting January 1st 2011 all preparers must have a PTIN to continue making money in the tax realm.  You can start to register for this at www.irs.gov/taxpros.

According to the IRS registration only takes 15 minutes and will allow you do be set for the next year without the worry of last minute problems.  And if you are already on top of the game and registered before September 28th you need to register again as the ever changing government has created a new signup process.

If this is the first time you have heard of this PTIN it is simply a nine digit number that preparers must use when they sign a tax dorm for a return or to claim a refund.  In the past a PTIN was only optional and a social security number would suffice.  No longer will this be the case.
